Homework 1 ("cages and paintings") results

The results of Syntax Homework 1 have been posted. This applies only to digital submissions. Those students who have submitted non-digitally, but would like to know their results are invited to talk to me during my duty hours. Likewise, if you have submitted electronically but would nevertheless like to go into a deeper discussion of selected issues by all means come as well.

no (definite failure)

3 projections from a phrase are not allowed. Two are possible, at most, provided that one is a specifer (e.g. the determiner of and NP or the subject NP of a sentence)

no (marginal failure/near pass)

First of, conjunctional phrases do exist, but they are not supposed to be used at during this course. If you want to use the recently proposed minimalist style conjunctional phrase per the likes of Johanssen, then you can't use tertiary projections from bars. This is an exclusive alternative. The attribute rule, introduced recently, is also missing here. Using a N' and then a CONJ" is redundant.

You have treated PPs as though they were AdvPs and you have heads projecting from phrases of different categories. Furthermore, 3 projections from a phrase are not allowed. Two are possible, at most, provided that one is a specifer (e.g. the determiner of and NP or the subject NP of a sentence)

no (definite failure)

You have treated the phrase as a sentence and have phrases projecting from other phrases rather than bars.

yes (with some points deducted)

"Cages" has an N projecting into another N, but this looks like a type-o. The gallery and the "paintins" have too many bars (you overshot it on the attribute rule here). Triangles are not allowed in detailed diagrams.

This parse tree should NOT contain any adverbial phrases. Also, you should not use CONJ" unless you want to use a newer (recently proposed) version of our theory (Minimalism rather than GB). They are not required on the final. Lastly, there are multiple cases of extra projections from phrases (these should stem from bars).

yes (marginal pass/near failure)

Everything below the N' which is the mother of "paintings" is wrong. These are neither A"s nor Adv"s. Everything above that is mostly correct.

no (definite failure)

Phrases cannot project immediately from other phrases. You also used a comlementizer (C) as a conjunction (CONJ).

400470

no (definite failure)

Neither phrases nor heads can project immediately from other phrases or heads.

no (definite failure)

[SUBMISSION NOT ANONYMOUS! NAMES MUST NOT BE GIVEN IN HW FORMS] Neither phrases nor heads can project immediately from other phrases or heads. The same goes for conjunctions, which in our simplified version of GB project from bars.

400306

no (definite failure)

This is not a sentence. Also, you used complementizers instead of conjunctions, you drew bars that change categories without phrases being attached, and you drew phrases projecting into phrases without intermediary bard between them.

no (definite failure)

Neither phrases nor heads can project immediately from other phrases or heads.
